Modeling maize and soybean responses to climatic change and soil degradation in a region of South America

Climatic change effects on crop yields are expected to be crop- and site specific. Here, Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer models were used evaluate climatic mitigation strategies maize (Zea mays L.) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in soils of the subtropical semi-arid region Chaco. Simulations performed DK747 A8000 genotypes, calibrated CERES-Maize model a previous report CROPGRO-Soybean present study, respectively. Both crops markedly differ their response putative levels atmospheric CO2 concentration. The observed significant reductions future climate scenarios (5–42% compared with baseline, 1986–2010) more associated increased temperatures that shortened cycle than water stress. Delaying sowing date is feasible strategy mitigate this effect. Projected temperature increases play secondary role determining yields. Instead, stress will continue an important constraint yield context global warming, but effect strongly affected by rainfall regimes. Responses raising pronounced (+10–40%) (+2–4%). Soil degradation exacerbated negative warming yields, especially maize, which highlights importance soil conservation practices. high interannual variability different sensitivities variables indicate diversification would key improve resilience agrosystems under scenarios.
